Beatrice Chebet has made history once again! At the 2024 Cursa dels Nassos in Barcelona, the 24-year-old Kenyan superstar shattered the women’s 5km world record with a jaw-dropping time of 13:54. Chebet, the reigning Olympic champion in the 5000m and 10,000m, became the first woman to run under 14 minutes on any surface.
This thrilling race showcased Chebet’s incredible skill, as she broke away early, paced by Dmitrijs Sergojins. Her competitors, including Ethiopia’s Medina Eisa and Uganda’s Belinda Chemutai, couldn’t keep up. Chebet’s time was 19 seconds faster than the previous record, a feat that will be remembered in the history of athletics.
Medina Eisa finished second with a record-setting U20 time of 14:23, while Chemutai clocked a personal best of 14:36 to secure third place.
The men’s race was equally exciting, with Kenyan Matthew Kipkoech Kipruto taking the title in 13:28, narrowly beating France’s Pierrik Jocteur Monrozier and Spain’s Abdessadam Oukhelfen.
Chebet’s triumph is just the beginning. With her sights set on the World Championships in Tokyo, she aims to dominate the 5000m and 10,000m events. Stay tuned for more updates on this inspiring athlete’s journey to greatness!
