A new medal for medalists. On December 16th, the three athletes from the prefecture who won the gold medals at the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics were awarded the Prefectural Honor Award. The winners of the Prefectural Honor Award were Keiko Sugiura from Shizuoka City, who won the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympic Baseball, Suguru Iwazaki from the Hanshin Tigers, and Keiko Sugiura from Kakegawa City, who won two gold medals at the Paralympic Games. A certificate of merit and a plaque were given to the three people, and Governor Kawakatsu said, “The feat of the gold medal gave the citizens of the prefecture bright hope and vitality.” Up until now, only three people have received the Olympian and Paralympic Prefectural Honor Awards, but the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics have become a gold medal rush for athletes related to the prefecture, and a total of nine people have received the awards. Pitcher Iwasaki also visited the Shizuoka City Hall on the 16th and donated toys to the children’s garden in the local Shimizu Ward. This activity is carried out every year by the Hanshin Tigers player to which Iwasaki belongs, and in 2021 he presented 50 boxes of block toys with the Tigers sticker on them.
