Tanaka Shiho, who won her first victory in the women’s 70kg class at the World Judo Championships held in Hungary, made a triumphant return to her hometown of Hikari City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Tanaka has been frustrated at the World Championships he has participated in twice so far. He missed out on the Paris Olympics due to an injury to his right knee, but his third attempt made him the long-awaited number one in the world. When reporting his victory at Hikari City Hall, he said with a smile, “I’ve been really happy because I was aiming to win,” and recalls the final, saying, “It was difficult to do with opponents who have had experience playing against each other, but I’m glad I was able to score a move and win.” He also expressed his strong aspirations, aiming to win the gold medal at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, saying, “I will work hard to become stronger for the next three years.” Tanaka is scheduled to stay in the prefecture until the 28th.
