Australian swimmer Emma McKeon made history at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo: In the 100m freestyle final, she set a new Olympic record of 51.96 seconds and broke the magical 52-second barrier – the second woman ever to do so.

McKeon won her first individual gold medal by leading the race from start to finish and securing Australia’s ninth gold medal in Tokyo. Her compatriot Cate Campbell claimed bronze in the same race, giving Australia a rare one-two finish.

In addition to her gold in the 100 m freestyle, she also won the 50 m freestyle and the relay at the 2020 Games – with a total of four gold and three bronze medals, she was the most successful athlete at these Games.
