Brighton & Hove Albion’s 2025/26 transfer window has taken another turn on Friday, with regards to the future of Facundo Buonanotte. The Argentina international was expected to have a reduced role under Fabian Hurzeler this season, and with the transfer deadline approaching on Monday, his name is at the centre of Premier League headlines.
Buonanotte returned to The AMEX Stadium in July after a successful loan at Leicester City, where he scored six goals and supplied three assists for the side relegated to the Championship. Supporters were eager to see him step into a creative role in Hurzeler’s high-tempo Brighton side, particularly after the departures of João Pedro to Chelsea and Simon Adingra to Sunderland. Yet Albion have now confirmed they are open to another loan move, provided it guarantees him regular football.
Leeds United looked to have the deal wrapped up. A medical was arranged, flights were booked, and Daniel Farke was ready to build his new Premier League attack around the Brighton attacker. Then, at the last moment, the transfer collapsed. Reports now suggest Chelsea are closing in on a loan agreement that would take Buonanotte to Stamford Bridge instead. For Albion, it would be another chapter in a well-trodden path linking The AMEX with west London, following the moves of Moisés Caicedo, Robert Sánchez and Marc Cucurella.
The timing of this saga is crucial. Brighton start their Premier League campaign aiming to push for another European place after finishing eighth last season. Hurzeler has already introduced academy players like Harry Howell, while new arrivals Diego Coppola and Maxim De Cuyper strengthen the spine of the squad. Yet Buonanotte’s ability to unlock defences could still prove vital in matches against top-six opposition. Losing him, even temporarily, places extra pressure on Kaoru Mitoma, Yankuba Minteh, Georginio Rutter, Matt O’Riley – plus new signings Stefanos Tzimas and Charalampos Kostoulas.
