They improved to twelfth place in the table with 25 points, Union is tenth with 28 points. After seven games without a win, Gladbach once again celebrated a threesome and thus gave themselves a little breathing room in the relegation battle. Coach Eugen Polanski is also more firmly in the saddle again. Before the game, Borussia were under a lot of pressure. And after a few minutes of scanning, the team took charge. The first good chance went to Jens Castrop, who was already past Berlin goalkeeper Frederik Rönnow after a pass from Rocco Reitz, but Christopher Trimmel blocked the shot from a tight angle. A little later, 17-year-old Wael Mohya, making his starting debut, fired a shot over the box from 13 meters, and then Haris Tabakovic tested goalkeeper Rönnow with a header after a corner. Mohya became the youngest starting eleven debutant in the club’s history against Union. Time to take the wind out of Gladbach’s sails, the Berliners probably thought, and that’s what they did. As a result, they retreated far away, stood compactly and made the spaces narrow. Gladbach had a hard time with this and time after time didn’t really know what to do with the increased possession of the ball. Borussia were not compelling enough and played rather awkwardly towards the Union goal. There were therefore no more than a few half chances. Whatever Gladbach tried, it bounced off the Berlin defense. Things only got exciting again shortly before the break. Union had the first good chance. After a free kick, Gladbach didn’t get the ball cleared and suddenly Rani Kedhira appeared free in front of goalkeeper Moritz Nicolas – but he got to the ball a little earlier. And then Kevin Diks should have made it 1-0 for Gladbach. After a powerful shot from Philipp Sander, Rönnow was unable to hold on to the ball, but Diks managed the feat of heading the rebound over the goal from close range. As far as the level was concerned, things didn’t get any better in the second half. Gladbach remained limited in the final third, Berlin continued to rely on a compact defense. Sander and Castrop tried it from a distance, but that was it. After an hour, boredom was the order of the day in Borussia Park. Gladbach simply wasn’t compelling enough, the “Iron” waited calmly for their chance. Afterwards, Gladbach were unlucky when a goal from Diks didn’t count because Reitz was offside when it was created. Borussia reacted defiantly to the decision of the referee team led by Matthias Jöllenbeck. They had their best phase and really got some speed on the pitch for the first time. The Köpenickers withstood the pressure. But Gladbach didn’t let up. In the final phase, cross after cross flew into the Berlin penalty area. After 80 minutes, one of them slipped through to substitute Hugo Bolin, but he shot too hastily from 13 meters and missed. Shuto Machino then failed from three meters to Rönnow, who had let a shot deflected by Reitz ricochet forward. And then Gladbach scored, even if not out of the game. Stanley Nsoki caught Bolin on the penalty area line, after a VAR check Jöllenbeck pointed to the spot and Diks converted the penalty.
