Despite an early setback against Freiburg, Eintracht Frankfurt has returned to the fight for the European ranks – and has moved past the sports club. In the deserved 2-0 (0-0) win, Farès Chaïbi (64th minute) and Jean Bahoya (81st) scored a dream goal for Frankfurt, who continued to march through under new coach Albert Riera. Freiburg did not disappoint, but was too harmless in the end and made crucial mistakes in defense. After just 40 seconds, Yuito Suzuki sent centre-forward Igor Matanovic a steep shot, but Frankfurt keeper Kaua Santos was paying attention and cleared it outside the penalty area. But Matanovic tried to get to the ball and hit the Brazilian badly on the foot. The keeper, who had suffered a torn cruciate ligament just last year, was then treated for minutes: his knee was apparently affected again. After a five-minute interruption he had to be replaced by Michael Zetterer – Matanovic surprisingly escaped without a personal penalty from referee Christian Dingert. Both teams then initially sought their rhythm. Freiburg mostly carried out their attacks through Vicenzo Grifo, Frankfurt tried with Arnaud Kalimuendo’s speed advantage on the right wing – but the precision of their actions was a long time coming. It wasn’t until the 24th minute that things became really dangerous. Kalimuendo had broken through again on the right and passed to Nathaniel Brown in the middle. Noah Atubolu was only able to deflect his 20-meter shot forward, but he was there with a brilliant reflex when Jonathan Burkardt was knocked down from close range. Five minutes later, Atubolu was challenged again when Mario Götze sent Kalimuendo on his way – again the Freiburg keeper remained in control with a strong reaction. His counterpart was practically not challenged at all – but in stoppage time in the first half he almost had to reach behind him. When Freiburg scored its first (!) goal, Matanovic easily beat Robin Koch in an aerial battle after a precise cross from Christian Günter, but the ball clattered back into the field from the right inside post. Right at the beginning of the second round, Zetterer was able to distinguish himself. Grifo took a hard shot from almost ten meters away from the goal, and the Frankfurt keeper’s view was blocked – but he still punched the ball out of the right corner. As a result, both teams played quickly forward, in the case of SC defender Matthias Ginter, too quickly. His pass in the build-up game was intercepted and led to a lightning counterattack: Nnamdi Collins fed Chaibi, who put Eintracht in the lead with a low shot. Freiburg held on and had good chances, especially thanks to substitute Derry Scherhant. But while Zetterer got stronger and stronger, Atubolu allowed himself to be overcome a second time – but he had no real chance of getting to the ball when Bahoya’s wonderful lob from a tight angle into the far corner. Afterwards, both teams continued to apply pressure in a game worth seeing. However, Frankfurt failed to use the counterattack better and Freiburg simply couldn’t get past Zetterer.
