Antonio Pettigrew (born November 3, 1967 in Macon, died August 10, 2010 in Chatham County) – American athlete specializing in long sprint runs, participant in the Summer Olympic Games in Sydney (2000), world champion in the 400 meters run (Tokyo, 1991).
In 2008, he was disqualified for the use of illegal doping substances in the years 1997-2001, his results in both individual and relay events were annulled, and his medals were taken away (including gold medals in relay races 4 x 400 m at the World Championships in Athens (1997) and Seville (1999) and the Olympic Games in Sydney (2000), as well as a silver medal in the 4 x 400 m relay at the World Championships in Edmonton (2001).
After his playing career ended, he was a coach at the University of North Carolina. On August 10, 2010, his body was found in the back seat of a locked private car. The cause of death was given as an overdose of sleeping pills, but it was not clear whether it was suicide or an accident.
