Japan hosted Iraq in Asian 2014 World Cup qualifying knowing a victory would see them well on their way to Brazil.
Both sides were undefeated in the group stage heading into the match in Saitama. Japan topped Group B with two wins and a draw so far, while Iraq had drawn their two opening matches.
It was the visitors who had the best early chance, Ahmed Ibrahim testing Eiji Kawashima with a close-range header. But Japan soon made them pay at the other end when Shinji Okazaki got in behind the defence after a throw in.
Ryoichi Maeda was on hand to turn in Okazaki’s cross, giving Japan a 1-0 lead.
Iraq almost pulled one back just before the break – Ahmed Yaseen Gheni seeing his curling shot desperately saved by Kawashima. Japan had several chances to kill the match in the second half.
This effort from Keisuke Honda only kept out by a combination of goalkeeper Noor Sabri and the upright. The hosts eventually held on to secure the win and a vital three points, which leaves them top of Group B with 10 points. Iraq’s qualification hopes are now looking slim, with just two points from three matches.
