The Under-20 boys’ 100m heats at the 50th Carifta Games witnessed a dramatic scene as Bouwahjgie Nkrumie, Jamaica’s world leader in the event, pulled up and went down on the track in pain. The incident occurred at around the 80-meter mark, just as he was leading comfortably.
Assistance quickly came to his aid, and Nkrumie was helped into a wheelchair and taken away for medical attention. He was seen holding onto his right leg. Nkrumie’s absence from the event is a significant loss, as he was one of the most highly anticipated competitors in the event, following his impressive 9.99 seconds run at Champs, making him the first Jamaican schoolboy to run sub-10.
The young sprinter, a member of a rare club, is only the third junior athlete in the world to achieve a sub-10 time in the 100m. The Carifta Games, which have been taking place since 1972, are an annual athletics competition for countries in the Caribbean region, featuring athletes from under-17 and under-20 age groups. Over the years, the games have helped to produce numerous world-class athletes.
