We join the rest of the world in celebrating this year’s International Women Day by looking at outstanding women who have dominated Nigeria sports in recent months.
Simi Adeagbo: Adeagbo in February 2024 made history as the first African and Nigerian to compete in bobsleigh at the IBWF World Championship in Germany.
She has been flying Nigeria’s colours since 2017 and she was the first black Olympian in the winter sliding sport after participating at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games.
Asisat Oshoala: The Bay FC striker became the first individual (male or female) to win the African Footballer of the Year for a record six times.
Oshoala is shining light in women’s football across Africa and she is giving back to the society through the Asisat Oshoala Foundation in Lagos.
Blessing Oborududu’s: Currently the second-best women’s wrestler in the world. Oborududu has cemented her place in Africa’s wrestling history after emerging as the continent’s champion for 12 straight years from 2010 to 2023.
The 34-year-old is also an Olympics silver medallist at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
Tobi Amusan: Amusan is still the world record holder in the women’s 100m hurdles with a time of 12.12 seconds.
Her athleticism and brilliance on the track inspire millions of women across the world and she stands as a shining light in her discipline.
