*TheAthleteSpine – Team USA Rowing – Women’s Eight – Charlotte Buck*
As we focus on the upcoming Summer Olympics in Paris, we are excited to be joined by Charlotte Buck! She is a member of the Team USA Women’s Eight and will rowing in the Stroke Seat in Paris!
Her story to becoming an elite rower is a fun one, as she took her competitive drive from high school mock trial/moot court and channeled to rowing, when she picked it up at Columbia University.
Research studies have shown that 30-50% of rowers will experience some type of lower back pain during a 12-month period. In fact, low back injuries account for 15-25% of all rowing injuries.
Why is this? Well, one of the main causes of this pain has been linked to rowing posture. During 70% of the stroke cycle, rowing athletes are actually working in a flexed posture. This position can cause strain on the muscles in the lower back, resulting in pain over time. Muscle spasms are also common in this athlete population.
A focus on injury prevention and physical therapy are incredibly important in the prevention and treatment of these lower back muscular injuries (strains, spasms, etc…). Another major plug for consistent core strengthening!
Charlotte shares her personal story of lumbar spasms at a critical point in her rowing career.
Looking forward to cheering on Charlotte and the Team USA #WomenIntheBoat this summer!
