Kieler’s striker, Benedikt Pichler, took the first chance of the game after 107 seconds and headed the hosts to the lead. This was followed by one of the biggest upsets of the entire second division season. After an alleged handball by Kiel defender Patrick Erras shortly before the goal line, Fortuna called for a penalty. According to the video images, referee Sven Jablonski decided against it (4th). The Kiel team then survived the visitors’ pressure phase and tried to control the game until the half-time whistle. In the second round, Fortuna took increasing risks. However, they were unable to capitalize on their chances. The guests from Düsseldorf only managed to equalize when Christos Tzolis converted a penalty kick (70′). After the equalizer, Kiel had to tremble again. However, they ultimately managed a draw over time and were promoted to the Bundesliga for the first time. The Düsseldorf team also secured the relegation place. The lineups: Holstein Kiel: Weiner – Johansson, Erras, Ivezic – Rosenboom, Sander, Holtby (86th Mees), Rothe – Bernhardsson (86th M.
