In 1980, just weeks before the Olympics. Elena Mukhina was left permanently quadriplegic because of a poor landing while training the “Thomas Salto.” She later died due to quadriplegia complications in 2006 at 46 years old. Due to her accident, and many other serious injuries, these skill were banned in women’s gymnastics after the 1992 Olympics.
