Jamaican Roje Stona caused a sensation at the Olympic Games in Paris and won the gold medal in the discus throw. The 25-year-old surpassed his previous best and threw exactly 70 metres.
The silver medal went to the Lithuanian world record holder Mykolas Alekna, who had hoped to bring discus gold back into the family 20 years after his father Virgilijus Alekna. In the end, however, he was just three centimetres short of triumph.
Australia’s Matthew Denny took bronze with a distance of 69.31 metres in a top-class competition.
