The most anticipated first final of the Tokyo 2025 World Athletics Championships did not disappoint. The women’s 10,000m brought together some of the greatest distance runners in the world — and Ethiopia walked away with its first medal of the championship. 🇪🇹🥉

Defending champion Gudaf Tsegay fought bravely against Olympic champion and world record holder Beatrice Chebet of Kenya, as well as Italy’s fast-rising star Nadia Battocletti. In the final lap, the three surged ahead in a thrilling showdown. Chebet’s finishing speed proved unbeatable as she claimed gold in 30:37.61, Battocletti held strong for silver in 30:38.23, and Tsegay powered home for bronze in 30:39.65, adding yet another global medal to her collection.

Ethiopia’s depth was on display: Ejegayehu Taye (5th, 30:55.52) showed her consistency, Fotyen Tesfay (8th, 31:21.67) delivered a solid run, while Tsigie Gebreselama (22nd) struggled on the day but remains one of Ethiopia’s brightest young talents.

Though not the gold Ethiopia hoped for, this bronze is a powerful statement — the Ethiopian team has arrived, and this is only the beginning. With the marathon, 3000m steeplechase, and more distance finals to come, Ethiopia’s Tokyo 2025 medal hunt is just heating up.
