India’s Neeraj Chopra had to settle for a disappointing eighth-place finish in the men’s javelin throw final at the World Athletics Championships 2025 in Tokyo on Thursday.
Neeraj’s best throw at the National Stadium came on his second attempt, where he logged 84.03m.
The two-time Olympic medallist failed to make the final round after finishing outside the top six in the fifth round. Neeraj was the reigning champion coming into Tokyo25, having bagged a historic gold medal at Budapest two years ago.
This was the first time that Neeraj Chopra failed to finish in the top two of an international competition since Tokyo 2020. The last time he failed to make the top three of an event was back in 2018.
Neeraj’s compatriot Sachin Yadav, meanwhile, narrowly missed out on the podium as he finished fourth with a personal best throw of 86.27, which he managed in the opening round.
Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem also had an underwhelming outing, finishing 10th with an 82.75m throw as he failed to make the cut for the penultimate round.
Trinidad and Tobago’s Keshorn Walcott (88.16m) won the gold medal, Grenada’s Anderson Peters (87.38m) finished second and the USA’s Curtis Thompson (86.67m) was third.
