A new coach will take over at Eintracht Frankfurt on Monday. Despite an increase in performance, it was also shown against Bayer Leverkusen that this is urgently needed. The 1:3 (0:2) in the Bundesliga was the fourth defeat in the fourth game under interim coach Dennis Schmitt, three of which occurred in their own stadium. In the fifth minute, Arnaud Kalimuendo fell after Robert Andrich kicked the SGE striker’s calf. Robert Schröder didn’t whistle and stuck to his assessment even after consulting with his video assistants and taking a second look at the scene. He didn’t make public how the 36-year-old came to this decision in his following announcement; he simply said over the microphones that there was no criminal offense. One explanation could be that Kalimuendo extended his leg very far, thus enabling the Andrich kick. But is that really enough to not decide on a penalty in this situation? Questionable. Schmitt spoke afterwards of a “clear penalty”. The game initially suffered from the four-minute interruption that resulted. However, as Leverkusen gained more control of the game, they took advantage of the long-standing weaknesses in Frankfurt’s defense. Arthur dribbled from the right side, passed to Alejandro Grimaldo and got the ball back with his backheel, the Brazilian’s shot into the near corner did the rest, with SGE keeper Kaua Santos looking very unhappy for the second time this season (26th). The goalkeeping issue will be one of the big ones for Albert Riera, who plays one last game with his current club NK Celje on Sunday at NK Maribor and on Monday the coaching position in Frankfurt takes over. But the concern on the line is just one of many, at the forefront is the entire defensive network. Even when Tillman made it 0-2, he seemed completely disorganized despite the large number of men (33′). Leverkusen almost secured an important victory for the race for the top 4 in the Bundesliga in the first half. But Edmond Tapsoba missed the 100% chance of making it 3-0 from five meters (45th + 3). Robin Koch brought Eintracht back in the margin after Janis Blaswich had saved his first shot on goal (50th). Afterwards the game was actually open because Leverkusen lost the thread and Frankfurt put pressure on – but without being particularly dangerous. The closest thing came after a long-range shot from Arthur Theate, who shot a little too high immediately after winning the ball (67′). After that, however, Ellyes Skhiri ensured that Frankfurt’s hopes fell significantly again. Just a few seconds after his first yellow-worthy foul, the Eintracht professional tackled Christian Kofane on the halfway line and rightly flew off the pitch (70′). In the final 20 minutes under Schmidt, the struggling hosts had to somehow find the key to winning the point when they were outnumbered. Leverkusen took advantage of this situation with their passing strength and let the ball run through their own ranks almost the entire time. However, the Hjulmand team seemed a bit complacent at times, messing up several promising attacks and numerical superiority moves. So, at least in theory, Frankfurt still had the opportunity to score a point with just one targeted attack. This one attack didn’t come despite chances for Nathaniel Brown (88th), which Blaswich fended off, and a header from Aurele Aumenda that went just wide. And so it remained the fourth defeat since the dismissal of former coach Dino Toppmöller; in total, Eintracht now only has one win from the last 13 competitive games.
