The Dodgers aren’t just thinking about 2026.
They’re thinking about the next eight years.
Andrew Friedman spoke on Day 1 of Spring Training about Shohei Ohtani’s role with Team Japan, his throwing progression, and the organization’s long-term vision for him as a pitcher.
After pitching deep into October last year and coming off surgery, Ohtani will DH only in the World Baseball Classic — a decision made after detailed conversations between Ohtani and the Dodgers front office.
“The competitor in him doesn’t love it… but he understood it.”
Why?
Because the goal isn’t just this season.
It’s keeping Shohei Ohtani healthy and effective on the mound for the next eight years.
Friedman emphasized that while Ohtani will be less restricted than last year, the Dodgers still recognize the unique workload he carries as a two-way superstar. The plan? Read and react. Monitor recovery. Gradually increase aggression as the season progresses.
And yes — the expectation is that Ohtani will be in the Dodgers rotation from the start of the season.
The message is clear:
This is long-term thinking.
This is October planning.
This is protecting a generational arm.
