CUBS ROSTER FINALIZED! Ben Brown IN, Javier Assad OUT! Seiya Suzuki IL Update!

Chicago Cubs fans, we have officially reached the “Decision Day” at Sloan Park! With Opening Day against the Nationals just three days away, manager Craig Counsell has pulled back the curtain on the final 26-man roster. While there is plenty to celebrate with a new homegrown arm making the cut, we also have a sobering update on one of our biggest offensive stars.

1. The Ben Brown Era Begins!
In the biggest “win” of the spring, Ben Brown has officially been informed that he has made the Cubs’ Opening Day roster! After a dominant Cactus League showing where he debuted a devastating new sinker, Brown beat out the veteran competition for the final spot in the bullpen. Expect Counsell to use Brown as a high-leverage “multi-inning weapon” early in the season. With a fastball that touches triple digits and a curveball that falls off a table, Brown is the breakout candidate every Cubs fan needs to watch in 2026.

2. The Javier Assad Shocker
In a move that highlights the Cubs’ incredible pitching depth, Javier Assad has been optioned to Triple-A Iowa to start the season. This wasn’t a performance-based decision—Assad has been steady as a rock for years—but a numbers game. By sending Assad to Des Moines, the Cubs ensure he stays “stretched out” as a starter. If any member of the rotation (Matthew Boyd, Cade Horton, or Shota Imanaga) falters, Assad will be the first phone call Jed Hoyer makes.

3. Seiya Suzuki to the IL (WBC Fallout)
Now for the tough news. Craig Counsell confirmed that Seiya Suzuki will officially start the season on the 10-day Injured List. Suzuki suffered a right knee PCL sprain during a headfirst slide in Japan’s World Baseball Classic quarterfinal against Venezuela. While the MRI was described as “minor,” the Cubs are playing it safe with their $85M outfielder. This move is backdated, meaning we could see Seiya back at Wrigley by early April, but for Opening Day, expect a heavy dose of Michael Conforto and Dylan Carlson in the corners.

In today’s emergency roster breakdown:

Ben Brown’s New Role: How Craig Counsell plans to use the “Montana State” of pitchers in late-inning situations.

The Assad Strategy: Why Triple-A is the best place for Javier to stay ready for a June rotation push.

Seiya Suzuki Recovery Timeline: When can we realistically expect the “Japanese Slugger” back in the #3 hole?

Opening Day Lineup Check: With Seiya out, who hits behind Alex Bregman on Thursday?

The 26-Man Final Look: We break down every name heading to Chicago for the first pitch.

NEXT MAN UP.
The 2026 Cubs were built for this. While losing Seiya hurts, having the depth of Conforto and the electric arm of Ben Brown shows why this front office was so aggressive this winter. We are 3 days away from “Go Cubs Go” echoing through the neighborhood!
