Dave Roberts discussed Shohei Ohtani’s first start of the season and the expectations surrounding his return as a full two-way player.
Roberts emphasized Ohtani’s mindset and focus as he prepares for a complete season on both sides of the ball.
“He’s very focused, very determined… when he sets his mind on something, he wants to see it happen.”
After limited outings last year, Roberts said Ohtani showed urgency and intention every time he took the mound.
“There was real intention… he was dialed in.”
He also noted that Ohtani’s stuff looks even sharper this year, especially his breaking pitches.
“The feel for the breaking ball is much better.”
When it comes to Ohtani’s goals on the mound, Roberts made it clear this goes beyond just competing.
“He wants to be the best pitcher in baseball.”
And even with the challenge of being a full-time two-way player, Roberts believes chasing a Cy Young is within reach.
“It sounds absurd… but if anyone can do it, he can.”
Roberts added that health will ultimately be the key, but the mindset and ability are already there for a historic season.
