Even under René Wagner, 1. FC Cologne seemed to remain on the losing end after goals from Jonathan Burkardt (66th minute) and Arnaud Kalimuendo (69th) – then Jakub Kaminski (70th) and Alessio Castro-Montes (83rd) secured an extremely important point in the Bundesliga in a 2-2 (0-0) draw at Eintracht Frankfurt. After 35 seconds, Michael Zetterer had a harmless shot from Kaminski tapped in, Ragnar Ache was dusted, but the Eintracht goalkeeper got his hand on the ball and prevented the early 0-1. It would have been the perfect start for Cologne after the dismissal of Lukas Kwasniok, for whom his assistant coach Wagner took over on an interim basis. Frankfurt then took control, but it took some time to dangerously get through the FC defense. A strong chip ball from Hugo Larsson ensured that Ansgar Knauff ran towards the Cologne goal, but was firstly under pressure and secondly was unlucky that Marvin Schwäbe directed his shot past the goal with his fingertips (24th). The goalkeeper also defused Frankfurt’s second good chance of the first half against Kalimuendo (34′). Said El Mala had previously appeared for the first time. Wagner had the Cologne whiz kid act in the center instead of on the usual left wing and he had problems with that. In the 26th minute, El Mala still showed his class, after a strong dribble he circled the ball just past the corner – it was only his third ball action in the game. Shortly before the break he prepared another great chance, but Zetterer saved against Kaminski, who had pushed the ball too far (41′). In the second half, Cologne was also primarily looking for a counterattack, but initially didn’t find the opportunities to do so like in the first half. But it also became a little quieter for Schwäbe, Frankfurt lacked speed and special ideas with its many ball relays, the attacks practically all followed the same pattern, with which the guests’ defense had few problems. However, with his substitutions, Riera brought about a change in this regard; the coach brought Fares Chaibi into the game, among others, and with it more vigor in the offensive game. An example of this came in the 66th minute, when the Algerian stepped up, moved into the penalty area and made it 1-0 very easily with a cross pass for Burkardt, the striker only pushed the ball over the line from five meters. With this moment, things were going well for Frankfurt, the determination was back – and Cologne was back in the losing lane. Kalimuendo increased it to 2-0 just three minutes after Burkardt’s goal, and again a joker had his feet in the game before his finish with Ayoube Amaimouni-Echghouyab (69′). However, Cologne made a comeback, after winning the ball high, Kaminski scored with a strong individual effort and was lucky that his shot was deflected (70th). The game now really got going, Kaminski missed the double chance to equalize shortly after his goal (71st/72nd). After that, the game calmed down in terms of sport, and due to a medical emergency, the discontinued support from the two fan camps also ensured acoustic calm. There was excitement again when El Mala appeared free in front of Zetterer, but was also denied by the strong Eintracht keeper, who once again spread out and parried (81′). Shortly afterwards, Zetterer was also defeated – and the jokers were also decisive on the Cologne side. Marius Bülter got the ball after a cross, brought it back into the center, where Alessio Castro-Montes, who was also substituted, pushed it into the empty goal in Burkardt style (83′). However, it stayed that way, Cologne remained winless for the eighth time in a row, but scored a point that was important in the table and, above all, for their own self-confidence.
