BPO = Broadcasting Ethics and Program Improvement Organization has released an opinion that there was a “serious violation of broadcasting ethics” in NHK’s documentary program on the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics. This documentary program was broadcast on NHK’s BS1 in December 2021, “Tokyo Olympics as seen by Naomi Kawase”. In the scene in question, “a man who is participating in the anti-Olympics demonstration” appears. “He confessed that he was actually being mobilized for money,” the subtitle said. However, this man had never actually participated in the anti-Olympic demonstrations. Regarding this broadcast, BPO pointed out that “failed to confirm the basic facts”. He added that the demonstrators had given the false impression that they were not a group of staunch opponents of the Olympics, but that they were paid to act on the wishes of the organizers. He determined that there was a “serious violation of broadcasting ethics.” Regarding this opinion, NHK said, “We reconfirmed the basic stance of broadcasting that seeks to pursue the truth at every stage of coverage and production, and steadily implement measures to prevent a recurrence that are currently underway to gain the trust of our viewers.
