In 2016, American hurdler Kendra Harrison had an Undefeated start to the season, winning 7 in a row in the 100m Hurdles including breaking the American Record in the 100m Hurdles at the 2016 Prefontaine Classic World Athletics Diamond League Meet in Eugene Oregon.
Then Things started to Fall apart for her.
She was the heavy favorite to win the 2016 USA Olympic Trials and the favorite to win the 2016 Rio Olympics!
The USA Olympic selection process for the 100m Hurdles is:
… you must finish in top three of the finals at the Trials to make the USATF Olympic team.
She placed 6th, Loosing to Brianna Rollins, Kristi Castlin & Nia Ali who placed 1,2,3 and would represent the USA in the 2016 Olympics.
But She managed to Rise Again!
Two weeks later, at a diamond league event in London
She again faced off against the three American athletes that beaten her at the trials.
Keni wins the race & finishes with a huge margin of victory.
But the time only reads 12.58s.
But then clock was then adjusted to 12.20s, breaking the world record which had stood for over 28 years by one-one hundredths of a second .
(Previous World Record 0f 12.21s had stood since 1988 by Bulgarian Athlete Yordanka Donkova.)
Even though she was the world record holder, she had failed to qualify to compete at the Olympic held only a few weeks later.
However, the three Americans that made the team would go on to sweep the Olympic podium for the first time in history winning gold, silver, and bronze.
She would get her redemption in 2021 where she won the silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in the 100m Hurdles.
As of 2023, Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan now holds the 100m hurdles World Record with a time of 12.12s.
