At the Koshien final in the summer of 1998, he became the second player in history to achieve a no-hitter and attracted attention as the “monster of the Heisei period.” Joined the Seibu Lions in 1st place in the 1998 draft. He won the most wins from his rookie year and received the Sawamura Award. Won a bronze medal at the 2000 Sydney and 2004 Athens Olympics. He was the MVP of the World Baseball Classic in 2006 and 2009. In 2006, he signed with the Boston Red Sox and became the first Japanese pitcher to win the World Series. Returned to the Japanese baseball world in 2015 and joined Seibu Lions in 2020. Retired from active duty at the end of the 2021 season.
