He was selected to represent Japan in the WBC in 2006, and in 2013 he achieved his 2000th hit. He became a player and manager in the 2014 season, and announced his retirement in 2016. He played in a total of 3,021 games (the most in NPB history) and hit home runs in 27 consecutive seasons, a hit that was entered in the Guinness Book of World Records. After retiring from the Chunichi Dragons in 2016, he worked as a critic and commentator for various media.
