He played in Koshien at Enokawa High School (currently Iwami Chisuikan), and after graduating, he joined the Yokohama Taiyo Whales (currently Yokohama DeNA Baystars) as the first draft pick. In 1998, he won the Best Nine, the Golden Glove Award, and the Best Battery Award, contributing greatly to the team’s rise to number one in Japan. He transferred to the Chunichi Dragons in 2002. He was selected to represent Japan in the WBC in 2006, and in 2013 he achieved his 2000th hit. He became a player and manager in the 2014 season, and announced his retirement in 2016. He played in a total of 3,021 games (the most in NPB history) and hit home runs in 27 consecutive seasons, a hit that was entered in the Guinness Book of World Records. After retiring from the Chunichi Dragons in 2016, he worked as a critic and commentator for various media.
