Borussia Mönchengladbach didn’t get beyond a draw against bottom team 1. FC Heidenheim and thus missed a break in the Bundesliga’s relegation battle. In the 2-2 draw on matchday 28 at Borussia Park, Wael Mohya (16th minute) and Franck Honorat (74th) scored for Gladbach, Patrick Mainka (26th) and Marnon Busch (64th) scored the goals for the guests. The cushion in 16th place is currently six points, but could shrink to three points on Sunday. Despite another respectable success, the Heidenheimers remain at the bottom with 16 points. FCH has now been waiting for a win for 15 games. “We deserved to win,” said Heidenheim’s coach Frank Schmidt in the Sportschau interview. “We completely controlled the game after the equalizer and just missed making the preliminary decision.” Gladbach’s coach Eugen Polanski was thin-skinned at the Sportschau microphone – and not just when asked why he only brought in top scorer Haris Tabakovic after 70 minutes. Polanski didn’t want to get involved in any math games either. “We’ve known all along that we’re playing to stay in the league. We would have liked to have won today.” Gladbach took the initiative right from the start and had a lot of possession, but Heidenheim had the first chance of the game. During a quick transition attack on the right side, Eren Dinkci shot from eight meters, Rocco Reitz blocked the ball just before the goal line. This made the direction of both teams clear: Gladbach tried to build up pressure, Heidenheim relied on the counterattack. The Borussia initially implemented their plan better. After Jens Castrop won the ball high, Franck Honorat and Castrop again passed the ball to the 17-year-old Mohya, who immediately took off. Goalkeeper Diant Ramaj was still there, but the ball rolled over the line into the goal. Heidenheim invited the “foals” to score goals – and they gratefully accepted. However, the lead didn’t last long. Niklas Dorsch brought a free kick from the right side sharply to the five point, where Mainka rose up and put the ball precisely into the corner. Gladbach’s defense wasn’t consistent enough. The FCH stuck with it, gave Gladbach a duel on equal terms and played courageously forward. There was a break in Gladbach’s attacking game and the “Foals” became more flawed at the back. Shortly before the break, Mathias Honsak appeared free in front of the goal, but was denied by Gladbach goalkeeper Moritz Nicolas from a tight angle. This was then also required with a powerful shot from Mainka from 14 meters. The keeper was just able to direct the ball around the post. We went into the break 1-1. Even after the restart, the Heidenheimers were more awake, Gladbach seemed lethargic and passive and seemed to have lost their self-confidence in the dressing room. The fans didn’t understand that either, the first whistles were blown. From Gladbach’s point of view, it happened the way it had to. Marvin Pieringer walked through the Gladbach defense, his powerful shot was blocked, but then fell at Busch’s feet and he made it 2-1. Gladbach coach Eugen Polanski brought in Hugo Bolin alongside Tabakovic in the final phase – and things got better. The equalizer was still more of a coincidence. The Heidenheimers simply couldn’t get the ball cleared and Kevin Diks was blocked twice. Somehow the ball ended up at Honorat, and he was lucky that his shot was deflected and landed unstoppable in the goal. As a result, Gladbach came close to scoring the winning goal. Goalkeeper Ramaj had to save several times against Tabakovic and Co. In the end it remained 2:2.
