Yesterday afternoon, April 17, 2026, Brazil lost its biggest name in basketball. Oscar Daniel Bezerra Schmidt, or simply Oscar Schmidt, left us at the age of 68 after being found unconscious in his home, in Santana de Parnaíba, in Greater São Paulo. Rushed to the city hospital, he was confirmed dead at around 2:30 pm. Pan-American champion in 1987 and one of the greatest scorers in the history of Brazilian basketball, Oscar was the uncle of Bruno Schmidt, Olympic champion in beach volleyball in 2016 alongside Alisson Cerutti, and brother of Tadeu Schmidt, now the presenter of BBB.
