May 24, 2025 VfB Stuttgart prevails dominantly against Arminia Bielefeld in the DFB Cup final and thus wins the first major title since the 2007 championship. A success that finally seals the rebirth of the club. The man who is largely responsible for this upswing is called Sebastian Hoeneß. And he should no longer be seen as just Uli Hoeneß’s nephew. When he was introduced in April 2023, there was a feeling that he would be the one to lead the VFB back to the top. Stuttgart had become practically completely irrelevant and was regularly stuck in the bottom of the table. What the club needed was a coach who was not only personally convincing, but also made the difference tactically. And that’s exactly what Sebastian Hoeneß brought with him. Within a year he saved the VFB from relegation and formed his team into a Champions League team which no one would have really thought possible. In his first full season, Hoeneß led VfB to runner-up with 73 points and the Bundesliga season with the highest points in the club’s history and thus to the best placement since the championship. Historical milestones were also set this season. In March, he surpassed the legendary master coach Helmut Benthaus with his 54th Bundesliga victory as VfB coach. He also now has the best points average of all Stuttgart coaches. In addition, Hoeneß has always had to reckon with important departures in recent years, which makes his success all the more impressive. With Serhou Guirassy, Waldemar Anton, Hiroki Ito, Enzo Millot and Nick Woltemade, they lost very important key players who played a significant role in the rebirth of Stuttgart and yet they always played at the top. To be honest, it was only a matter of time before every team had him on their radar, like no small club like Real Madrid. It was only recently announced that they were Madrilenians are interested in him and have probably been watching him for a long time. The problem at Real is that tactical coaches simply don’t work, as we already saw with Xabi Alonso. Being a coach at Real Madrid means managing the egos of the players and one really doubts whether Sebastian Hoeneß would do something like that to himself. The fact that he is even being considered as a possible coach for Real also shows what incredibly good work he does at VFB – qualities that make him one of the best German coaches in recent years.
