Oscar Daniel Bezerra Schmidt was born in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, on February 16, 1958, and died on April 17, 2026, at the age of 68. With 49,737 points scored throughout his 26-year professional career, Oscar was for many years considered the greatest scorer in basketball history. His record was only surpassed in 2024 by LeBron James. Oscar is the highest scorer in the history of the Olympic Games with 1,093 points, maintaining this record to this day. His greatest achievement was leading Brazil to victory over the United States in the 1987 Pan American final in Indianapolis, a result that marked the Americans’ first home defeat in history. Oscar was the scorer in all the competitions he participated in, including three Olympics (1988, 1992 and 1996), where he set a record of 42.3 points per game in 1988. Oscar started professionally at Palmeiras in 1974, winning the Paulista at just 16 years old, and then the Brasileiro in 1977. At Sírio, he was interclub world champion in 1979.
