Rewind to October 15, 2024, for one of the most “smash-and-grab” moments in Socceroos history!
Playing in front of a massive crowd at Saitama Stadium, the Socceroos were under the pump against a dominant Japan side. Having managed only one shot (and zero on target) for the entire match, Australia found a “miracle” lead in the 58th minute.
Following a field transition by Japan’s keeper Zion Suzuki and a flick from the Aussies, Lewis Miller charged down the right flank. His speculative cross into the box forced Japanese defender Shogo Taniguchi into a panicked clearance, slicing the ball into his own net.
It was a remarkable moment that gave Tony Popovic’s side a shock lead with 30 minutes to go, marking the first goal Japan had conceded in the entire qualifying cycle! The match eventually ended in a 1-1 draw, but this own goal remains a legendary “how did that happen?” moment.
