Eintracht Frankfurt suffered the next low blow in the battle for Europe on Friday evening. The team of current coach Albert Riera lost 2:3 (1:2) at Borussia Dortmund and thus missed the temporary jump to seventh place. If SC Freiburg wins against Hamburger SV on Sunday (3:30 p.m.), the first season without international competition since the 2017/18 season would be perfect. Can Uzun gave Eintracht an early lead at BVB (2′), but Serhou Guirassy (42′), Nico Schlotterbeck (45’+1) and Samuele Inacio (72′) then scored for Dortmund. Jonathan Burkardt’s goal (87th) came too late. Coach Riera also thought of a few surprises for the line-up in what was most likely his penultimate game as Eintracht coach. Mo Dahoud and Ellyes Skhiri replaced Hugo Larsson and Oscar Höjlund in the double six, while Arthur Theate was once again allowed to play in central defense. In attack, Jonathan Burkardt rotated back to the bench and Farès Chaibi replaced him in the attacking midfield. What changed it? In contrast to many other games in the recent past, Eintracht was wide awake, at least from the start. After a little more than one turn of the hand, the ex-Dortmunder Dahoud beat several opponents and passed the ball on to Uzun. The 20-year-old shot straight into the penalty area and gave his team an early lead with a well-placed shot into the far corner. What a start. As a result, Eintracht withdrew more and more, but still presented themselves in decent shape. BVB had chances through Marcel Sabitzer (15th), Inacio (17th) and Julian Brandt (25th), but overall the Hessians showed commitment and compactness. Ritsu Doan could have even added a second goal after a counterattack (39′). Dortmund pressed, Eintracht defended and relied on switching situations. That’s how it works – at least in theory. In practice, the home team stepped up their game in the final phase of the first half and turned the game around within just four minutes. First, Guirassy used a cross in world-class style to equalize, then Schlotterbeck followed up in stoppage time. Overall, it was a bitter outcome for the Hessians, a draw at the break would definitely have been possible. Anyone who expected a stormy unity after the break was disappointed. Coach Riera’s team, which actually needed every point in the race for seventh place, remained completely harmless on offense, and Mario Götze and Jean-Matteo Bahoya, who came on after around an hour, didn’t change anything. BVB managed their lead and dominated the action; as so often this season, Eintracht didn’t have much to offer. Chaibi scored a goal from an offside position (54′), Uzun shot once on goal (60′), Bahoya once shot well over (62′). That’s it. BVB certainly didn’t play like stars, but coach Niko Kovac’s team was a much more mature team overall and earned the lead and ultimately the victory. The Borussia team also showed their individual class at some point in the second half, after some nice preparatory work by Maxi Beier, youngster Inacio supposedly put the lid on it (72′). At first there was no real resistance from Eintracht in the form of attacks – but things still got exciting again. Substitute Burkardt scored out of nowhere in the final phase to make it 2:3 and bring his team back into the game. Shortly later, Bahoya even had the equalizer in the 88th minute. However, Frankfurt’s happy ending in the form of a late point win did not materialize.
