Roberts said the Dodgers strongly considered the blister situation but felt Ohtani still had enough left to finish another inning.
“I thought about it, but the stuff was still good.”
He also revealed the bleeding may have been related to a change in Ohtani’s normal blister treatment.
“I don’t know if it came off or he didn’t use it today and that’s what spurred the bleeding late.”
Despite concerns about both the knee and blister, Roberts does not currently expect Ohtani to miss his next start.
“I feel good that right now I don’t see why he won’t make his start.”
Roberts added that extra rest could become an option later in the season if needed, but not at the moment.
“Down the road, could it happen? Potentially.”
The Dodgers manager also explained why he chose to use Ohtani as a pinch hitter after his outing.
“He can hit a homer.”
Roberts said Ohtani told him he felt comfortable taking the at-bat, making the decision easier despite the ongoing concerns.
