Germany welcomed Japan to Wolfsburg in an international friendly almost a year after their dramatic FIFA World Cup meeting in Qatar. The hosts dominated possession from the opening whistle, but Japan once again proved lethal on the counterattack with their pace and clinical finishing.
Junya Ito opened the scoring in the 11th minute after a well-worked move, before Leroy Sané equalized for Germany eight minutes later. Japan restored their lead in the 22nd minute through Ayase Ueda and remained organized defensively despite Germany’s constant pressure.
As the match entered the final minutes, Germany committed more players forward in search of an equalizer. Japan took full advantage, with Takuma Asano scoring in the 90th minute before Ao Tanaka added a fourth in stoppage time to complete a stunning 4-1 victory.
The defeat marked the end of Hansi Flick’s tenure as Germany head coach, while Japan celebrated one of the greatest away victories in their history, once again defeating four-time world champions Germany in convincing fashion.
