Shohei Ohtani Broke The MVP Market So Badly Sportsbooks Invented A New Bet To Save It

Sportsbooks looked at the National League MVP race in the middle of July and basically shut it down. BetMGM currently has Shohei Ohtani at minus 5000. That is a 98.04 percent implied probability. In July. With months of baseball still to play. Books do not hand out 98 percent on anything.

His odds went from minus 475 to minus 5000 in about a month. He opened the season at minus 145 and has never once dipped into plus money all year. The line has only moved in one direction.

So the books invented a new market. It is called Ohtani vs The Field, and it pays plus 900. You can bet on Ohtani, or you can bet on every other player in the National League combined, and that second option is still a nine to one underdog.

The reason is the stat line. Ohtani is on pace for more than five wins above replacement as a hitter and more than five as a pitcher in the same season. He has never done it. Nobody has.

His pitching alone is worth 17 runs above average. Pete Crow-Armstrong, the second-place favorite and an elite defender, has saved 12 runs with his glove. Ohtani’s side gig beats the best tool of the guy in second place before he takes a single swing.

Crow-Armstrong is having a monster year and sits at thirty to one.

On the mound Ohtani carries a 1.79 ERA with 95 strikeouts. He leads the league in on-base percentage. He just became the first Japanese-born player to 300 home runs.

The only real opponent left is the calendar.
