Fabian Hürzeler has some huge decisions to make before Brighton & Hove Albion’s 2026/27 season gets underway. After one of the busiest starts to a summer transfer window in recent memory, the Seagulls head into a campaign featuring Premier League football and UEFA Conference League action with a squad that looks fairly different to the one that finished last season.
Adam MacDonald picks what he believes is Brighton’s strongest starting XI based on the current squad, taking into account the club’s summer signings, departures, injuries and the players most likely to be available for the opening weeks of the season.
Brighton’s recruitment has once again attracted plenty of attention. Luka Vušković has arrived in a club-record move to strengthen the defence following Jan Paul van Hecke’s departure to Tottenham Hotspur, while Pascal Struijk, Costinha, Michael Svoboda and exciting winger Zadok Yohanna have all joined as Tony Bloom’s recruitment team continue to reshape the squad. Portuguese youngster Rodrigo Rego has also arrived before heading out on loan for further development.
There have also been significant departures. Van Hecke’s move to Tottenham is the headline exit, while Diego Coppola has left permanently, experienced figures Adam Webster, Joel Veltman and Solly March have departed, James Milner has retired, Jeremy Sarmiento has been sold, and several younger players including James Beadle and Brajan Gruda have headed out on loan.
With Lewis Dunk, Carlos Baleba, Matt O’Riley, Jack Hinshelwood, Pascal Groß, Ferdi Kadioglu, Maxim De Cuyper, Georginio Rutter, Yankuba Minteh, Kaoru Mitoma, Danny Welbeck, Charalampos Kostoulas, Evan Ferguson, Tommy Watson and many more competing for places, selecting Brighton’s best XI is anything but straightforward.
