Dodgers President of Baseball Operations Andrew Friedman discussed the club’s approach ahead of the MLB trade deadline while also providing encouraging updates on several key injured players, including Shohei Ohtani, Tyler Glasnow, Blake Snell, Blake Treinen, and Will Smith.
Friedman emphasized that the Dodgers do not believe they have an “acute need” heading into the trade deadline thanks to the organization’s depth and the number of impact players nearing a return. While he confirmed the Dodgers will remain aggressive if a star player becomes available, he also stressed the importance of being selective rather than overpaying in July.
On Ohtani, Friedman explained the club’s decision to pause his pitching program is centered on protecting his left knee and preventing mechanical compensation that could place additional stress on his arm. He said Ohtani has continued throwing, expects him to resume catch play soon, and remains confident he’ll return to the mound this season. Friedman added that if not for the knee issue, Ohtani would likely still be taking his regular turn in the rotation.
Friedman also shared positive progress reports on Glasnow, Snell, Treinen and Will Smith, saying the injuries themselves are behind them and the focus is now on safely building each player back for the stretch run. He reiterated the Dodgers’ philosophy is to “get them back to stay back,” not simply rush them onto the field.
